INTERPOMA 2010
7° International trade show for cultivation, storage and marketing of apples
Bolzano, 4-6 November 2010

INTERPOMA: an outstanding benchmark for the entire apple economy

(Bolzano, 10 May 2010) Spring has come to the South Tyrol apple orchards. The season that is now beginning will eventually conclude with "Interpoma", the International Trade Show devoted to apple cultivation, storage and marketing programmed from 4 to 6 November 2010. Since all the most important players in the sector will be taking part, there are great expectations for the novelties that will be presented on this occasion.
In mid-March, the first blossoms appeared in the apple orchards that cover 18.500 hectares of cultivatable terrain. The Laimburg Agrarian and Forestry Experimental Centre recorded that the Golden Delicious trees sprouted one week later compared to last year and four days after the 21st of March, the date taken as the average for many years.
From the apple marketing viewpoint, over the last two years (since the previous edition of Interpoma, in 2008), the South Tyrol apple industry has seen important changes and major novelties. This has been due above all to the renewal of marketing structures and the creation of new alliances, in response to the inexorably increasing importance of the food retail trade. Since 2008, the seven fruit cooperatives of the Val Venosta - reunited in the Vi.P Association, responsible for roughly one third of local produce - have been coordinating sales of their produce through a single sales point. As from this year there will also be intense synergetic collaboration between the 18 different cooperatives united under the VOG, Association of South Tyrolean Fruit Growers' Co-operatives. This organisation will sell their members' combined output (roughly two thirds of South Tyrol's apple harvest) through four Pools.
Inter-regional cooperation and a common approach to Eastern markets are at the basis of the organisation FROM, recently formed from synergies between VOG and Vi.P, both producers' associations from the region of Trentino and the fruit processing company VOG Products.
In recent years the South Tyrol apple harvest has set one record after another. Various experts, however, believe that fruit and vegetable sector has probably reached its peak: as far as the current season goes, nonetheless, they declare themselves decidedly optimistic. According to observations made by the Fruit-growers and Vine-growers Advisory Centre, despite the record harvest of 1.1 million tons, the new spring blossoms are extremely promising.
From a cultivation and nursery viewpoint, there is a widespread appetite for change. South Tyrolean fruit growers have been showing courage in renewing their apples varieties. Up to just a few years ago the tendency was to grow established varieties, but now various new kinds of apple are making their appearance, like Modí® (CIV G198), Kanzi® (Nicoter) and Jazz® (Scifresh), in the conviction that in future these newcomers will open up new profitable horizons. On the other hand, the Pink Lady® remains consistently attractive to many growers.
In the field of agriculture - as in all economic activities - a crucial factor in achieving success is the ability to keep well informed. In this sense "Interpoma", which will take place in the Bolzano Trade Fair complex from 4 to 6 November 2010, presents a perfect opportunity for all those operating in the apple sector, offering unequalled possibilities for updating knowledge and exchanging information.
