Plant Protection
The Department of Plant Protection aims to develop and test practical strategies for the control of plant parasites; it seeks protective measures that secure the harvest on the one hand, but are safe for the handler, consumer and environment on the other. These research activities cover all areas of agriculture in South Tyrol. The experimentation and research focus on the following:
- Basic research on the biology and ecology of pests and beneficial organisms
- Development and testing of organic alternatives to pesticides, including biocontrol and other solutions
- Strategies for fighting and controlling pests
- Studies on the impact of crop protection measures on agro-ecosystems and the environment
- Study of resistance development in plant parasites and generation of new strategies to prevent it
- Pesticide testing with regard to their effects and side effects
- Testing of plant propagation material in accordance with health regulations
- Diagnostic screening of plant samples for pests
- Identification of pests, consultation services and public information
