Herb Cultivation

Interest in medicinal and aromatic plants has clearly increased over the last few years. This is highlighted by the fact that herbs have developed into an interesting supplementary – or even primary – crop in South Tyrol’s low- and high-mountain zones. For some mountain farms, this offers additional perspectives and represents a new opportunity for economic survival.

The goal of the Department of Specialised Crops is to convey new insights and vital knowledge – both theoretical and practical – about medicinal and aromatic plants to growers. This will help to provide the basis for a competitive production of premium organic herbs in South Tyrol, thus guaranteeing an income to the region’s farms.

Appropriate varieties and cultivation sites, adequate cultivation methods, and competent plant drying and processing are prerequisites for high quality herbs. In addition, infrastructure for commercialisation must be built, improved and secured, and innovative products need to be developed.

  • Testing of medicinal and aromatic plants for cultivation in low- and high-mountain zones
  • Research on the quality and on active ingredients of herbs
  • Experimental trials on farming and cultivation techniques
  • Fertilisation techniques and plant health in organic herb cultivation
  • Development of innovative approaches
  • Technical advice and advanced training in cultivation and processing techniques
