Terroir Studies

Viticulture in South Tyrol is distinguished by its multitude of sites and microclimates at various altitudes, degrees of exposure to sunlight, slope directions and inclination, soil characteristics and climatic conditions. All of these factors can influence grape quality. Terroir studies examine the interaction between the environmental conditions of a vineyard site and growth, yield and wine quality.

In South Tyrol, most vineyards are fitted with drip irrigation systems; factors related to climate and location dictate their operation. The water consumption of a grapevine depends on the variety, age of the vineyard, training system, yield, rootstock and many other factors. Irrigation tests study the effect of the administration of different water quantities at various time points on the growth and the yield as well as the quality of grapes and wine.

  • Climatological studies
  • Viticultural surveys such as phenology, maturity tests, yield, mineral content, etc.
  • Measurements of ground humidity and leaf water potential
