IN MERANO, ITALY’S MOST BEAUTIFUL GARDENS CAST THEIR SPELL

The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle: in a unique fusion of art and nature, more than eighty garden landscapes from around the world are nestled into a twelve-hectare natural amphitheatre-shaped site. Opened in June 2001 after seven years of construction, South Tyrol’s most popular tourist attraction has already charmed more than two million visitors and received several distinguished awards. In 2005, the complex was voted “Italy’s Most Beautiful Garden”; just a year later, it was placed on the “Europe’s Top Ten Gardens” list, voted number six.

Numerous interactive stations and a colourful line-up of events charm young and old alike, and transform a visit to the Gardens into an experience for all five senses. Eleven Artist Pavilions interpret the processes of nature playfully yet educationally. Way up high, Matteo Thun’s spectacular viewing platform gives a birds-eye view of Merano and its surrounding mountain range, providing insight into exotic Mediterranean garden worlds. Fantastical sculptures keep watch in the newly opened Forbidden Garden.

From the sumptuous blooming of thousands upon thousands of tulips to the intoxicating hues of fall foliage to musical and culinary events, the Gardens won’t fail to delight. At the centre of the Gardens stands the castle that Empress Elisabeth – the beloved Sissi – once used for her winter cures. It now houses the Touriseum: South Tyrol’s regional museum of tourism, which traces two hundred dynamic years of alpine tourism history.
