Series of Lectures – Capire l'allocazione del carbonio in un vigneto di montagna (Progetto CLEVAS)

Ort: Laimburg Research Centre, Aula Magna

Abstract: The grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is one of the most widely cultivated perennial crops worldwide. Previous studies have indicated the potential of such agroecosystems to sequester and store carbon in the long term, which can help mitigate anthropogenic production of CO2. However, the contribution of different ecosystem components to the overall fluxes and the allocation of non-respired carbon (NPP) in vineyards is poorly understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to create a holistic carbon budget for the growing season of a mountain vineyard in Alto Adige (Plantaditsch, Caldaro), using a combination of biometric and micrometeorological methods. The results provide a better understanding of the fate of carbon in the ecosystem and can serve as a solid basis for future research in the area. Speaker: Torben Callesen (Free University of Bozen-Bolzano)

Series of Lectures – Mapping of agro-ecological initiatives in South Tyrol

Ort: online (MS Teams)

Abstract: Agroecology initiatives are on the rise in Europe, providing significant environmental and economic benefits to farmers and communities. The term "agroecology" is defined as a scientific approach, a farming practice and a social movement. Mapping means individualising agroecology-related initiatives to better understand success stories as well as limitations associated with establishing agroecology in an area. The "Mapping Agroecology" project is carried out at Italian level by the Associazione Italiana di Agroecologia (AIDA) in synergy with two European projects: "AE4EU" and "ALL READY", funded by Horizon 2020. In South Tyrol we identified a number of small initiatives that falls under the concept of agroecology and we analysed these initiatives in order to map best practices, promote them to a wider audience and support the establishment a network. Speaker: Alfredo Mora Vargas (Laimburg Research Centre)

Series of Lectures – Effects of Drought and Heat Stress on Grapevine Physiology and Wine Quality

Ort: Laimburg Research Centre, Aula Magna

Abstract: Drought-induced water deficit stress on grapevine growth and subsequent effects on wine quality are of increasing concern in light of current climate trends. Many wine producing regions are located in areas with low water availability, and understanding the combined effects of heat and drought stress on wine grapes is critical to identifying solutions to promote healthy grapevine performance and berry quality. Through a series of experiments in the terraXcube climate chambers and in an experimental vineyard, we measured physiological response of vines to the aforementioned stressors. To examine the impact of abiotic stress on wine quality, microvinifications were carried out and underwent sensory analysis. Results indicate different methodologies for detecting plant stress, and that different grape varieties have more profound reactions to water deficit. Speaker: Amy Kadison (Laimburg Research Centre)
