Series of Lectures – Geographic tracing of cereals from South Tyrol (Italy) and neighboring regions via 87Sr/86Sr isotope analysis

Luogo: online (MS Teams)

Abstract: This study was designed to explore whether it is possible to discriminate between cereal samples from South Tyrol (Italy) and the neighboring regions Trentino, East Tyrol and North Tyrol by their 87Sr/86Sr ratios. In two sampling campaigns in 2019 and 2020 a total of 100 cereal fields were probed (soil and grain). No interspecific differences in the 87Sr/86Sr ratios were found when different cereal species were cultivated on the same field. An excellent correlation between 87Sr/86Sr ratios in cereal grains and soil samples was established. It was possible to link the 87Sr/86Sr ratios found in cereals and soils to geolithological features in the respective area. Cereal samples from South Tyrol showed relatively high 87Sr/86Sr values (0.715 – 0.724), separating them from the other investigated regions and from many cereal production areas of global importance. Series of Lectures – HEUMILCH: Chemical markers in milk for the detection of silage addition in feed of dairy cows

Luogo: online (MS Teams)

Abstract: Hay milk and its products are gaining importance in the market as they meet the consumers demand for traditional products. In hay milk regulation, fermented fodder is prohibited in the cows diet. Cyclopropane fatty acids (CPFA) are fatty acids produced by microorganisms in the fermentation of silage which were reported to be suitable markers to distinguish Parmigiano Reggiano from cheeses obtained feeding silage. The Heumilch project aims at optimizing an analytical method for milk to define the presence of silage in the ration. Previous studies considered maize silage and a novelty from the present work is including grass silage, often used in South Tyrol. Moreover, no literature data are available on the time required for CPFA to disappear or to be detected after silage removal or introduction. In this seminar the results of the Heumilch project are presented. Speaker: Federico Fava & Demian Martini-Lösch (Laimburg Research Centre)
