The Laboratory of Virology and Diagnostics performs tests on multiplication materials in fruit growing, viticulture, vegetable growing and horticulture as part of the health controls required by law.

Specifically, it performs diagnostic tests on plant samples to seek pathogens from virus, viroid, phytoplasma, bacteria, and fungal groups.

Commissioned Tests

The laboratory is appointed by the Plant Health Service of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen to carry out phytopathology tests as part of the plant health checks performed by this service and is responsible for identifying diseases requiring quarantine or subject to control.

The laboratory also performs numerous tests for the South Tyrolean Extension Service for Fruit Growing and Viticulture, for a range of cooperatives and businesses, and for private customers.

Laboratory Activities:

• Diagnostic testing of plant samples to research pathogens of virus, viroid, phytoplasma, bacterial and fungal groups
• Nursery tests of clones and parent plants to look for viruses, viroids and phytoplasma
• Tests of Laimburg vine clones and all propagation material in the selection of clones for viral disease research
•   Continued monitoring of stonefruits for Sharka infestation
• Analysis of seed potatoes for bacterial diseases requiring quarantine

Headquarters and Opening Times

The Laboratory of Virology and Diagnostics is located in the main building of Laimburg Research Centre.

The laboratory opening times are:

• Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.;
• Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
