Plant Protection Research Area
Activities in the Plant Protection research area are aimed at the development and testing of practical strategies for the regulation of parasites and plant disease, to protect harvests and meet the needs of consumers and environmental protection.
Scope of activities:
- Test of plant protection products for effectiveness and side effects.
- Optimisation of authorised plant protection products through intelligent use and based on requirements.
- Development and testing of biological and biotechnological measures and other alternative measures for the control and regulation of harmful organisms.
- Studies on the impact of plant protection products on agri-ecosystems and the environment.
- Sustainable management strategies to maintain and boost agricultural companies and biodiversity.

Evaluation of Plant Protection Products Working Group
The Evaluation of Plant Protection Products working group analyses the properties of authorised plant protection products and those in development. Studies focus on their effectiveness on target organisms but also on the side effects suffered by non-target crops and organisms. Tests are performed in the laboratory, in the greenhouse and in the field.
The results obtained are the basis for implementing integrated plant protection strategies in pome fruits, viticulture, berries and stonefruits cultivation.
Scope of activities:
- Testing of plant protection products and their active ingredients.
- Studies of the optimum time and techniques for application.
- Studies of the behaviour of plant protection products during their degradation.
- Development of dose-response curves.
- Examination of growing techniques supporting plant protection strategies.
- Development of anti-resistance strategies for plant protection products.
- Studies on the optimisation of plant protection strategies considering the biology of harmful organisms.

Biological Plant Protection Methods Working Group
The aim of the Biological Plant Protection Methods Working Group is to develop and test biological and biotechnical methods for the regulation of harmful organisms.
Scope of activities:
- Behaviour and effectiveness tests using natural substances on parasites and organisms of use to assess their activities in the laboratory and half-field.
- Field tests for monitoring and/or mass capture of target insects using chemical messengers such as kairomones and pheromones.
- Assessment of the effectiveness of entomopathogenic microorganisms against harmful organisms in the laboratory or half field.
- Collection of local strains of entomopathogenic fungi.
- Assessment of new methods of control for harmful organisms which combine chemical messengers and insecticidal properties (attract and kill, attract and infect).
- Use of specific useful organisms for biological control of invasive insect species.

Sustainable Cultivation Systems Working Group
The aim of the Sustainable Cultivation Systems working group is the sustainability of agriculture in South Tyrol. Through close collaboration with research, consulting and practice, we aim to develop and improve innovative, firmly implementable strategies to promote efficient farming that respects resources.
Scope of activities:
- Eco-toxic studies in the field of water protection.
- Research to avoid plant protection product residues in non-target areas (drift).
- Development of concepts for the integration of agroecological measures into the cultural landscape
- Development of strategies for the implementation of results in practice.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Contribution to local sustainability strategies.
