Laimburg Research Centre
Laboratory of Molecular Biology
The Laboratory of Molecular Biology investigates the genetic basis for the breeding of new varieties and for the development or prevention of plant diseases, such as apple proliferation.
The laboratory also provides variety authentication services for apple and grapevine varieties, as well as rootstocks.

Functional Genomics
The Functional Genomics working group investigates the factors that influence plant diseases. Molecular biology, biochemical, and bioinformatics methods are used for this purpose.
The group investigates how genetic information (genotype) relates to the actual function and appearance (phenotype) of organisms. Its research focuses primarily on plants and bacteria that are relevant to agriculture in South Tyrol.
The overarching goal is to decipher the molecular functions of genes and understand how environmental influences, genetic variation, and gene regulation interact to shape phenotypic traits (e.g., susceptibility and resistance to stress and diseases).
The group takes an application-oriented approach and explores innovative strategies for controlling plant diseases. Its work focuses specifically on:
- Plant diseases and the factors that influence them: Which genes and molecular processes determine whether a plant is susceptible or resistant?
- Economically important organisms and bacteria relevant to fruit growing and viticulture in South Tyrol.
This enables gene functions to be characterized across different species (plants and bacteria) and ultimately translated into recommendations relevant to breeding or plant protection.

Breeding Genomics
Whether it is taste, appearance, or disease resistance: many traits of our crop plants are defined in their genetic makeup. We research this genome to support the breeding of robust, high-quality varieties and to address practical questions regarding varietal authenticity.
Scope of Activities:
- Marker-assisted selection in apples: Using molecular markers, we evaluate young seedlings early on to identify plants carrying resistances (e.g., against apple scab) or desirable fruit quality traits. This makes the breeding process significantly more efficient.
- New Genomic Techniques (NGTs): We explore and apply innovative molecular biology methods in apple and grapevine to strengthen resistance and accelerate adaptation to climate change.
- Varietal and rootstock verification: Through DNA analysis, we reliably determine the identity and authenticity of varieties and rootstocks in apples and grapevines – for instance, to resolve ambiguities in commercial orchards, vineyards, or gardens.
- Genetic database: We are building a comprehensive database of DNA profiles for apple, grapevine, pear, cherry, and plum to uniquely identify varieties and safeguard genetic resources.
- Research on apple allergies: We investigate the allergenic potential of different apple varieties with the goal of developing and improving immunotherapy for birch pollen allergy through apple consumption.
