Nuts & Herbs: Regional, sustainable and diversified mountain products

Promoting sustainability and innovation in agriculture by growing walnuts, chestnuts, and medicinal and aromatic plants.

The NURBS research programme is an initiative to enhance niche agriculture in the Trentino-South Tyrol Region for the production of quality agrifood products with high potential.

The NURBS research programme is implemented at Laimburg Research Centre and by the Edmund Mach Foundation; it is promoted by the Autonomous Provinces of Bolzano and Trento.

The research programme focuses on niche crops of nuts, and aromatic and medicinal plants.

The crops studied include: chestnuts, walnuts, and hazelnuts, and aromatic plants such as mint, melissa, sage, and oregano. The research also covers Rhodiola rosea and Arnica montana, plants recognised in phytotherapy and as dietary supplements.

The aim of the NURBS research programme is to improve the sustainability and competitiveness of farms in Trentino-South Tyrol.

Aims of the NURBS research programme:

  • Improving agricultural practices using innovation for the cultivation of niche crops.
  • Preserving biodiversity at local level for cultivations including nuts, and aromatic and medicinal plants through germplasm banks.
  • Optimising the use of resources, water and soil, with particular focus on water sustainability.
  • Fostering economic development in mountain areas, supporting the production of high quality local agrifood products.
